Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk betoog ik dat onze ideeën over neuropsychologische stoornissen zoals afasie, agnosie, apraxie en amnesie vooral gebaseerd zijn op beschrijvingen van patiënten met specifieke uitvalsverschijnselen. Van de klassieke oudheid tot de renaissance kennen we geschriften waarin dergelijke patiëntbeschrijvingen voorkomen en waarbij we de neuropsychologische beelden kunnen herkennen. Ook het werk van Broca, Wernicke, Lissauer en Liepmann is op gevalsbeschrijvingen gebaseerd. In het moderne onderzoek spelen gevalsbeschrijvingen een cruciale rol. De niet geringe bijdrage van de Engelse neuropsychologe Elisabeth Warrington is vrijwel volledig gebaseerd op gevalsbeschrijvingen. Er is wel gesteld dat onderzoek naar specifieke cognitieve aandoeningen eigenlijk alleen goed gedaan kan worden bij individuele patiënten. Die stelling bevat een kern van waarheid, maar ook groepsstudies kunnen een zinvolle bijdrage leveren. Het is echter belangrijk om bij dat onderzoek, zowel van symptomen als van behandelingen, gebruik te maken van goede onderzoeksdesigns.
