Samenvatting

Stemmingsstoornissen zijn psychiatrische aandoeningen waarbij de verstoorde stemming op de voorgrond staat. Veelal wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen de unipolaire en de bipolaire (manisch-depressieve) stoornissen. De unipolaire stoornis behelst de depressieve stoornis die in aard, beloop en specifieke kenmerken tal van uitingsvormen kan hebben. Van een bipolaire stoornis is sprake wanneer er in het beloop tenminste eenmaal een manie of hypomanie is opgetreden.
Alleen al vanwege de uiteenlopende kenmerken van aandoeningen die alle onder de categorie stemmingsstoornis geschaard worden, ligt het niet voor de hand dat een eenduidige oorzakelijke factor aangewezen zal worden die het ontstaan van al die aandoeningen kan verklaren.
