Chikungunya: uitbraak in de Caraïben

Gootjes J. Chikungunya: uitbraak in de Caraïben. Huisarts Wet 2014;57(12):654-7.
Chikungunya is een virale aandoening die wordt verspreid door muggen van het geslacht Aedes. Na een recente uitbraak in de Caraïben verspreidt de aandoening zich snel. Het lijkt een kwestie van tijd dat ook Nederlandse reizigers uit dit gebied met koorts en polyartralgie bij de huisarts komen. Omdat chikungunya gevaarlijk kan zijn voor vooral kinderen, zwangeren en ouderen, is het belangrijk de ziekte tijdig te ontdekken. Daarom is het aan te raden, actief aanvullend onderzoek te verrichten naar dengue en chikungunya wanneer een patiënt zich presenteert met gewrichtsklachten en koorts na recent bezoek aan de Caraïben. Het Nederlandse klimaat is ongunstig voor Aedes-muggen, dus autochtone transmissie lijkt in ons land vooralsnog onwaarschijnlijk. Vector control is niet noodzakelijk.
