Samenvatting

Het gezin speelt een belangrijke rol bij het ontwikkelen van sociale en emotionele vaardigheden. Vijf gezinskenmerken vervullen daarbij een essentiële rol. Niet alleen de manier van opvoeden is belangrijk, ook de relatie tussen de opvoeders is van belang, evenals de communicatie tussen de gezinsleden, de organisatie van het gezinsleven en de sociale steun buiten het gezin, waarop een beroep kan worden gedaan. We laten eerst zien hoe de gezinsfactoren een belemmering vormen voor de ontwikkeling van kinderen en jongeren. Daarna behandelen we de vraag hoe het gezinsleven kan bevorderen dat voldoende sociale en emotionele vaardigheden tot ontwikkeling komen, zowel bij zich normaal ontwikkelende jeugdigen als bij jeugdigen met sociaal-emotionele gedragsproblemen. We presenteren een aantal interventies om vastgelopen of vastlopende gezinssituaties weer vlot te trekken. Tevens worden een aantal suggesties gedaan die het functioneren van gezinnen kunnen bevorderen.
