Behandeling van ondervoeding noodzakelijk en (kosten)effectief onderdeel van het medisch handelen

Samenvatting

Ziektegerelateerde ondervoeding komt veelvuldig voor in Westerse landen waaronder Nederland. Ondervoeding heeft grote gevolgen voor zowel de acute als chronische patiënt, zoals een verminderd inspanningsvermogen, trager herstel, en het gaat gepaard met hoge kosten voor de Nederlandse gezondheidszorg (1,7 miljard per jaar). Er is veel winst te halen bij vroege herkenning en behandeling van ondervoeding. Studies tonen aan dat de behandeling van ziektegerelateerde ondervoeding als onderdeel van het medisch handelen kosteneffectief is. Dit geldt ook voor de inzet van dieetvoeding voor medisch gebruik (‘medische voeding’).
