8. Afwijkingen in het hoofd-halsgebied

Inleiding

Bij alle vormen van kindermishandeling kunnen afwijkingen worden aangetroffen in het hoofd-halsgebied, die het gevolg zijn van kindermishandeling. De gemelde incidentie van afwijkingen in het hoofd-halsgebied bij mishandelde kinderen varieert van 43 tot 86%. Gezien het veelvuldig voorkomen van letsels in het hoofd-halsgebied moet bij alle kinderen bij wie een vermoeden van kindermishandeling bestaat, altijd een gedegen onderzoek van dit gebied, inclusief de mond- en keelholte, plaatsvinden. Dit geldt overigens niet alleen voor vermoedens van lichamelijke mishandeling, maar ook bij vermoedens van verwaarlozing of seksueel misbruik.
