7. Toegebracht schedel-hersenletsel bij kinderen

Inleiding

In dit hoofdstuk wordt gesproken over toegebracht schedel-hersenletsel (SHL) als vervanging van de term ‘shaken baby syndrome’. Het gebruik van shaken baby syndrome of hiervan afgeleide termen, zoals ‘shaken infant syndrome’ of ‘shaken/impact syndrome’, is klinisch en forensisch gezien onjuist. Het suggereert het voorkomen van slechts één traumamechanisme, namelijk schudden (shaken), bij één leeftijdsgroep, namelijk jonge kinderen, meestal onder de leeftijd van 1 jaar (baby – infant), eventueel in combinatie met een contacttrauma (shaken – impact). Gebruik van een neutrale term wordt aanbevolen. De American Academy of Pediatrics beveelt haar leden aan de term ‘abusive head injury’ te gebruiken. In Europa zijn er geen richtlijnen met betrekking tot het gebruik van specifieke terminologie.
