3. Aangeboren variaties in de geslachtelijke ontwikkeling

Samenvatting

Variaties in de geslachtelijke ontwikkeling worden in de internationale literatuur aangeduid met de term disorders/differences in sex development (DSD). Deze afkorting is ook in Nederland een gebruikelijke afkorting geworden. DSD wordt vaak als synoniem gezien voor een onduidelijk geslacht, in de medische terminologie ook wel aangeduid als intersekse condities. De term bevat echter alle condities die gepaard gaan met een geslachtelijke, chromosomale en gonadale ontwikkelingsstoornis. Het gaat hierbij dus om een parapluterm voor een aantal zeldzame tot zeer zeldzame aandoeningen. DSD-condities worden ingedeeld in geslachtschromosomaal DSD (waaronder Turner- en Klinefelter-syndroom), 46XX DSD, gekenmerkt door een overproductie van androgenen, en 46XY DSD, veroorzaakt door een verminderde productie of werking van androgenen. In dit hoofdstuk worden de belangrijkste condities beschreven.
