8 Gezinstherapie

Samenvatting

De gezinstherapie staat de laatste jaren sterk onder druk om te bewijzen dat zij een waardevolle bijdrage kan leveren aan een wetenschappelijk verantwoorde en efficiënte geestelijke gezondheidszorg. De concurrentie uit biologische en cognitief-gedragstherapeutische hoek is hard, en deze benaderingen sluiten op het eerste gezicht beter aan bij de tijdgeest: alles moet aantoonbaar, uitlegbaar en economisch verantwoord zijn. De gezinstherapie heeft zich ook te lang beziggehouden met interne discussies en uitzichtloze strijd tussen concurrerende scholen. Zo verwaarloosden de gezinstherapeuten het wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar de eigen effectiviteit, en het uitbouwen van efficiënte internationale therapieverenigingen, zodat gezinstherapeuten onvoldoende vertegenwoordigd waren in de academische wereld en in politieke beslissingsorganen. Daar is de laatste jaren verandering in gekomen. In hun hoofdstuk in het prestigieuze Handbook of psychotherapy and behavior change merken Sexton, Alexander en Mease (2004) op dat het veld van de relatie- en gezinstherapie volwassen geworden is. Deze nieuwe gezinstherapie – Lange (2004) spreekt van ‘no-nonsense gezinstherapie’ – wil ik in dit hoofdstuk nader voorstellen. Daarbij wil ik een korte schets geven van enkele elementen die kenmerkend zijn voor de gezinstherapeutische kijk op de wereld.Want dat is nog steeds essentieel aan de gezinstherapie: het is meer een manier van kijken (die de nadruk legt op complexiteit, verbindingen en relaties) dan een geheel van wetenschappelijke kennis of theorieën over de menselijke psyche of over psychisch lijden. In dit hoofdstuk wil ik verder schetsen hoe de relatie- en gezinstherapie een bijdrage probeert te leveren aan een globale aanpak van psychisch lijden, en hoe effectief gezinstherapie is.
