Samenvatting

De frozen shoulder is een invaliderende en – in het eerste stadium – zeer pijnlijke aandoening van de schouder. Ze wordt gekenmerkt door een pijnlijke synoviitis van het glenohumerale gewricht, gevolgd door fibrosering van het gewrichtskapsel waardoor forse bewegingsbeperkingen ontstaan: een ‘frozen shoulder’. De échte frozen shoulder is een zelflimiterende aandoening waarvoor dus eigenlijk geen andere behandeling nodig is dan tijd. Dat in veel gevallen toch wordt overgegaan op behandeling (conservatief, dan wel operatief) heeft diverse oorzaken, waarover later meer

Algoneurodystrofie wordt ook posttraumatische dystrofie, Sudeck-dystrofie of sympathische reflexdystrofie genoemd. De laatste tijd wordt ook de term CRPS (Complex Regionaal Pijnsyndroom) gebruikt. De gangbare Engelse benaming is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD).
