Samenvatting

Een van de eerste publicaties over het toepassen van leerprincipes ging over een kind, Peter, die bang was voor konijnen (Jones, 1924). In een gevalsbeschrijving zette Jones uiteen hoe het jongetje door langdurige blootstelling aan een konijn minder bang werd en zelfs op het konijn gesteld raakte. Naast geleidelijke blootstelling aan het konijn (exposure), gebruikte ze het oproepen van een tegengestelde emotie door het geven van lekker eten bij toenaderingsgedrag (contraconditionering) en vroeg ze een ander kind om voor te doen hoe je leuk met een konijn kunt spelen (modeling). In dit hoofdstuk wordt beschreven hoe leertheoretici en gedragstherapeuten tegenwoordig denken over het ontstaan van angst. Daarna wordt de diagnostiek bij angstige kinderen besproken. Het grootste deel van het hoofdstuk wordt besteed aan de beschrijving van technieken om angst te verminderen, geïllustreerd met een casus.
