Samenvatting

Een syndroom is een herkenbaar patroon van aangeboren afwijkingen met een bekende of bekend veronderstelde pathogenese c.q. oorzaak. De lichamelijke kenmerken verschillen per syndroom en vaak is er sprake van een verstandelijke beperking (bijvoorbeeld het syndroom van Down) of van een disharmonisch intelligentieprofiel (bijvoorbeeld het syndroom van Turner) of van specifieke gedragskenmerken (bijvoorbeeld compulsieve stoornissen bij het syndroom van Prader-Willi).
