Samenvatting

Alcohol is een algemeen geaccepteerd genotmiddel. Ethanol (ethylalcohol) is de alcohol zoals die wordt gebruikt in genotmiddelen. Alcohol wordt na inname voor het grootste deel gemetaboliseerd in de lever en voor een klein deel uitgescheiden via de huid en de longen. De afbraak van alcohol geschiedt met behulp van het enzym alcoholdehydrogenase. Alcohol heeft een werking op het centrale zenuwstelsel, op het gastro-intestinale systeem en op het cardiovasculaire systeem. In dit hoofdstuk wordt de invloed van alcohol op het risico voor harten vaatziekten besproken.
