De invloed van sociale normen op alcoholconsumptie

Samenvatting

Het drinken van alcohol is enorm populair onder studenten. De sociale norm is daarbij een belangrijke determinant, zeker voor studenten die lid zijn van een studentenvereniging. De drinknorm wordt vaak overschat. Voorafgaand onderzoek toont aan dat deze misvatting leidt tot een stijging in alcoholconsumptie. De hier gepresenteerde studie onderzocht het effect van een interventie die gebruik maakt van de socialenormbenadering op de alcoholconsumptie van studenten aan de Universiteit van Maastricht. Deelnemers (N = 324) werden willekeurig verdeeld over de interventie- en controlegroep. De interventiegroep kreeg een socialenormboodschap te zien met informatie over de werkelijke drinknorm. Norminschattingen en alcoholconsumptie werden gemeten tijdens de begin- en nameting, met een tussenperiode van vier weken. De resultaten toonden een verschil aan tussen de ingeschatte en werkelijke alcoholconsumptie van medestudenten op de beginmeting. De resultaten waren niet significant, alhoewel een verandering van de norminschatting tussen de begin- en nameting leidde tot een significante verandering in alcoholconsumptie. Deze bevindingen bevestigen de relatie tussen norminschatting en alcoholconsumptie, en ondersteunen de onderliggende theorie van de socialenormbenadering. Toekomstig onderzoek zou zich dan ook moeten richten op het ontwikkelen van effectieve socialenorminterventies die zowel norminschatting als alcoholconsumptie van studenten kunnen verminderen.
