Samenvatting

Een Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) is gedefinieerd als een acute symptomatische infectie van de lagere luchtwegen (terminale bronchioli, alveoli en interstitium) die buiten het ziekenhuis is ontstaan. Het merendeel van de bacteriën die een pneumonie veroorzaken komt tengevolge van aspiratie van secreet uit de oropharynx in de lagere luchtwegen.
