Systemische psychotherapie bij fysiek geweld in paarrelaties

Samenvatting

Dit artikel is een vervolg op een eerdere publicatie over partnerrelatietherapie bij paren die geweld gebruiken in hun conflicten (Van Lawick & Groen, 1998). Het daarin beschreven time-outprogramma wordt hieronder kort samengevat. Vervolgens wordt de werkzaamheid ervan geanalyseerd. Het >time-outprogramma blijkt te werken als een regulatieprogramma waarin cliënten leren zichzelf te kalmeren in situaties die heftige emoties oproepen, waardoor de zelfcontrole toeneemt. Het is een goed aan te leren manier om escalaties te doorbreken; in die zin voorkomt het niet alleen fysiek geweld maar kan het ook worden aangewend om psychisch geweld te vermijden. Cliënten ervaren hierdoor hun kracht meer door zelfcontrole dan door intimidatie en klein krijgen van de partner.
