Samenvatting

Naltrexon is een opiaatantagonist die de alcoholconsumptie van zware drinkers vermindert door het wegnemen van het belonende neurobiologische effect van alcohol. In 1994 werd naltrexon in de Verenigde Staten toegelaten als medicament in de verslavingszorg nadat het onderzoek in de jaren daarvoor een systematisch effect aantoonde. Echter, het medicament vond geen wijdverbreide toepassing in de behandeling van alcoholisme.
