Stoppen met roken onder adolescenten: niet zomaar een ‘lucky strike’!

Samenvatting

Hoewel weinig jongeren erin slagen succesvol te stoppen met roken, is er nog weinig onderzoek verricht naar de factoren die ervoor zorgen dat jongeren al dan niet slagen in hun stoppoging. Dit artikel richt zich dan ook op factoren die het verloop en de uitkomst van een daadwerkelijke poging tot stoppen met roken van jongeren beïnvloeden. Het artikel beoogt een compilatie te zijn van de resultaten die voortvloeiden uit het promotieproject ‘Adolescent smoking cessation: Not just a lucky strike!’, waarbij factoren die stoppen met roken en terugval onder jongeren voorspellen werden onderzocht. Hoewel deze resultaten in afzonderlijke artikelen in internationale tijdschriften zijn gepubliceerd, ontbrak tot op heden een synthese ervan. De belangrijkste conclusies zijn dat dagelijkse variaties in het geloof in eigen kunnen en ‘craving’ terugval tot roken voorspellen en dat het belangrijk is om stoppen met roken bij jongeren op een dynamische manier te onderzoeken door dagelijkse metingen te gebruiken.

1 Craving en negatief affect worden niet altijd als ontwenningsverschijnselen beschouwd, omdat ze ook ervaren kunnen worden wanneer er geen sprake is van abstinentie. Omdat ze wel als onderdeel van het ‘abstinence withdrawal syndrome’ worden beschouwd (Hughes, 1992; Hurt e.a., 2000) en omdat het huidige artikel zich voornamelijk richt op de processen die een rol speelden nadat jongeren waren gestopt met roken, scharen we craving, negatief affect en honger onder de noemer van ontwenningsverschijnselen.
