Sterfte door drugs: wat zeggen de aantallen?

Samenvatting

Sterfte geldt als de meest ernstige maar doorgaans vermijdbare uitkomst van drugsgebruik. Op Europees niveau is de drugssterfte daarom gekozen als een van de graadmeters voor de ernst van drugsproblematiek. Een toename of afname van het aantal drugsdoden kan wijzen op falen of succes van het preventie- en zorgbeleid. Vergelijkingen tussen landen snijden echter geen hout indien geen rekening wordt gehouden met verschillen in definities van drugssterfte en de wijze van registreren en rapporteren. In dit artikel beschrijven wij trends in de drugsgerelateerde sterfte in Nederland volgens het protocol van het European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).
