Occupational physicians will have to redefine their role. Two reports worthy of attention offer the handles for executing their core tasks, which are the identification of occupational disorders and the counselling on measures aimed at the prevention of those occupational disorders. These reports were recently produced by the Social and Economic Council (SER) and the Hugo Sinzheimer Institute (HSI) of the law faculty at the University of Amsterdam. Conclusions: the detection, diagnosis, reporting and registration of occupational disorders for the purpose of prevention and compensation can be, and have to be, improved. The SER considers monitoring and supervision to be essential. Following the diagnosis of an occupational disorder, the HSI would like to see appropriate arrangements for a financial compensation of the damage via an insurance or fund.
