Abstract

Verkalkingen in speekselklieren en/of hun ductus worden speekselstenen of sialolieten genoemd. Helaas zijn niet alle speekselstenen radio-opaak, waardoor ze niet altijd op röntgenfoto’s worden opgemerkt. Wat ze wel gemeen hebben, als ze voor een obstructie zorgen, is dat de patiënt zwelling krijgt van de speekselklier; vooral op het moment van gestegen speekselproductie, zoals bij aanvang van een maaltijd. De prevalentie in Centraal-Europa wordt geschat op zo’n 1,2%.
