Bij een skiduim wordt de duim traumatisch geabduceerd, waardoor er letsel optreedt van het ulnaire collaterale ligament van het metacarpofalangeale (MCP-)duimgewricht.
Bij onderzoek ziet men zwelling en een hematoom met drukpijn aan de ulnaire zijde van het MCP-gewricht.
Om onderscheid te maken tussen een partiële en een complete ruptuur wordt de stabiliteit van de duim onderzocht met een stresstest.
Is er geen instabiliteit bij de stresstest, dan is verdere behandeling niet nodig.
Bij instabiliteit komen een spalk of chirurgische behandeling in aanmerking.
Pijn en zwelling kunnen worden tegengegaan met koude kompressen en zo nodig pijnstilling.
