Samenvatting

Ouder worden gaat gepaard met veranderingen in de lichaamssamenstelling. Deze veranderingen worden niet alleen gekenmerkt door een relatieve toename aan vetmassa en progressief verlies aan botmassa, maar ook door verlies aan spiermassa. Dit laatste staat bekend als sarcopenie. In dit hoofdstuk wordt beschreven wat sarcopenie is, wat oorzakelijke factoren zijn, wat de impact is, hoe de diagnose wordt gesteld (met behulp van spierkracht, spiermassa en spierfunctiemetingen) en hoe de multidisciplinaire behandeling ervan vorm kan krijgen.
