Designerdrugs, ‘legal highs’, ‘research chemicals’, badzout of hoe ook aangeduid: nieuwe psychoactieve stoffen, meestal afgekort als NPS, zijn de afgelopen jaren uitgegroeid tot een fenomeen van wereldformaat. Op nationaal, Europees en mondiaal niveau maken we ons er ernstige zorgen over, niet in de laatste plaats vanwege de veronderstelde (soms fatale) gevolgen voor de volksgezondheid. Maar waar hebben we het eigenlijk over? NPS bestrijken een breed scala van stoffen met farmacologische eigenschappen en effecten die vergelijkbaar zijn met die van internationaal gecontroleerde drugs. Omdat het om zo’n breed scala gaat is het moeilijk een exacte definitie te geven. …
