Inleiding

Het centraal zenuwstelsel kan onder normale omstandigheden (in rust en bij normale temperatuur) maximaal drie minuten verstoken blijven van zuurstof, voordat er irreversibele schade optreedt. Daarom is er een aantal mechanismen die ervoor zorgen dat ook onder extremere omstandigheden schade door zuurstoftekort beperkt blijft.
