Samenvatting

Het mediastinum ligt centraal in de thorax. Door de veelheid van structuren wordt in het mediastinum een grote variëteit aan ziekteprocessen gezien: congenitaal, neoplastisch of infectieus. In dit hoofdstuk worden diverse aandoeningen in het voorste, middelste of viscerale en achterste mediastinum besproken. Achtereenvolgens worden thymomen, lymfomen, kiemceltumoren, struma, cysten, diverse neurogene tumoren, zoals schwannoom, neurofibroom, ganglionceltumor, neuroblastoom en feochromocytoom, belicht. Ten slotte wordt er ingegaan op mediastinitis. Dat is een ernstig ziektebeeld met een hoge mortaliteit. Een oesofagusperforatie is de meest voorkomende oorzaak van acute mediastinitis.
