Samenvatting

Het mammacarcinoom (borstkanker) is een kwaadaardige ontaarding in de borstklier. De behandeling van het mammacarcinoom bestaat uit verschillende modaliteiten, die in verschillende volgorde kunnen worden toegepast, afhankelijk van de aard en het stadium van de ziekte. Chirurgie en radiotherapie zijn in ieder geval aan de orde bij lokale ziekte, maar ook chemotherapie, endocriene therapie en immunotherapie kunnen aan de orde zijn. Mammacarcinoom wordt dan ook bij uitstek in teamverband behandeld. Vanaf de twintigste eeuw is er chirurgisch gezien een de-escalerende ontwikkeling geweest die nog steeds verder gaat. Waar aanvankelijk borst, borstspier en okselklieren altijd werden weggenomen, is men de afgelopen decennia steeds meer sparend gaan behandelen. Heden ten dage kunnen dan ook veel patiënten hun borst behouden.
