Samenvatting

Huidkanker is de meest voorkomende kankersoort in Nederland ( > 60.000 nieuwe gevallen op jaarbasis), vaker nog dan bijvoorbeeld het mamma-, colon- of longcarcinoom. De incidentie van huidkanker neemt sterk toe met het stijgen van de leeftijd, maar sommige huidtumoren (onder andere het melanoom) kunnen ook bij jongere patiënten voorkomen. De meeste huidtumoren zaaien niet of nauwelijks uit (basaalcelcarcinomen, plaveiselcelcarcinomen), maar melanomen en Merkel-celcarcinomen kunnen lymfogeen en hematogeen uitzaaien en zijn verantwoordelijk voor de meeste sterfte aan huidkanker. Met name bij het (regionaal) uitgezaaid melanoom is de afgelopen tijd grote vooruitgang geboekt in de overlevingskansen door de introductie van nieuwe behandelmogelijkheden: doelgerichte therapie en immunotherapie.
