Motiverende gespreksvoering is een gesprekstechniek om patiënten te gidsen in de richting van gedragsverandering. De basisprincipes zijn het tonen van empathie, versterken van ambivalentie bij de patiënt, omgaan met weerstand en versterken van het zelfvertrouwen van de patiënt. Motiverende gespreksvoering sluit goed aan bij de patiëntgerichte consultvoering van de huisarts. Tal van onderzoeken maken de werkzaamheid aannemelijk, hoewel er nog onvoldoende hard bewijs is dat motiverende gespreksvoering in de alledaagse huisartsenpraktijk concrete gezondheidsuitkomsten verbetert. Motiverende gespreksvoering is voor veel artsen en praktijkondersteuners goed te leren en prettig om te doen; patiënten voelen zich meer geaccepteerd en begrepen. Patiëntgerichte communicatie, óók in de tweede helft van het consult, is de basis van motiverende gespreksvoering. Dit kan in elk consult en gebeurt misschien te weinig. Als de patiënt ambivalent blijkt ten aanzien van het gegeven advies kan de huisarts aanvullende motiverende technieken inzetten, gericht op het ontlokken van verandertaal.
