Voorkomen dat ouderen vallen

Een sleutelrol voor valklinieken

Samenvatting

Vallen is een belangrijk probleem onder ouderen, omdat het vaak voorkomt en tot ernstige gevolgen kan leiden. Toch worden vaak alleen de lichamelijke gevolgen van een val behandeld en wordt er nauwelijks gekeken naar de oorzaak van de val, de aanwezige risicofactoren voor een recidief val en de mogelijkheden voor preventie . De meeste valincidenten worden multifactorieel veroorzaakt. Een groot deel van deze risicofactoren zijn modificeerbaar. Het is daarom zinvol om aan de hand van de aanwezige risicofactoren een multifactorieel interventieprogramma samen te stellen, waarmee een significante reductie van het aantal valincidenten bewerkstelligd kan worden. Het Landelijk Netwerk Valklinieken Klinische Geriatrie heeft een protocol ontwikkeld waarbij op gestandaardiseerde en evidence based wijze de risicofactoren in kaart worden gebracht en een multifactorieel interventieprogramma wordt samengesteld. Dit protocol wordt in dit artikel besproken.
