Hart- en vaatziekten zijn een erkend gezondheidsrisico voor de gehele Nederlandse bevolking. Op grond van de NHG-Standaard Cardiovasculair risicomanagement komt een groot aantal Nederlanders in aanmerking voor een risicoprofiel. Zo’n profiel en de bijbehorende follow-up zijn echter arbeidsintensief en komen boven op de vele andere taken die de huisarts al heeft – reden genoeg om de doelmatigheid ervan goed in de gaten te houden. De berekening in de huidige standaard is gebaseerd op het tienjaarsrisico. Deze benadering heeft beperkingen, want zij is voor patiënten soms niet erg inzichtelijk en heeft bovendien weinig te bieden aan mensen jonger dan 40 of ouder dan 70 jaar. Een benadering die uitgaat van het lifetime-risico biedt aanknopingspunten voor vroegtijdiger interventie, betere risicocommunicatie en doelmatiger risicomanagement.
