Samenvatting

De overleving van kinderkanker is in de afgelopen decennia toegenomen, mede dankzij verbeterde behandelstrategieën voor kinderen met kanker. Echter, twee derde van de overlevenden van kinderkanker ervaren ten minste één of meerdere nadelige langetermijngevolgen, zoals secundaire tumoren, cardiovasculaire problemen, longproblemen, nierschade, leverschade, gehoorschade, verschillende endocriene late effecten en psychosociale en neurocognitieve problemen. Idealiter wordt overlevenden van kinderkanker geadviseerd om op volwassen leeftijd regelmatig gecontroleerd te worden om langetermijneffecten vroegtijdig op te kunnen sporen en indien nodig en mogelijk te behandelen. Door het stijgende aantal overlevenden van kinderkanker, in absolute zin, krijgen steeds meer huisartsen te maken met deze groep patiënten. Daartoe verdienen langetermijneffecten na behandeling van kinderkanker meer aandacht in de eerste lijn en is het belangrijk de bewustwording te vergroten van de morbiditeit die reeds op relatief jonge leeftijd kan optreden.
