Samenvatting

Infecties van gewrichtsprothesen worden onderscheiden in primaire en secundaire infecties. De primaire infecties ontstaan tijdens de operatie en antibiotische profylaxe rond de ingreep is bedoeld om deze infecties te voorkomen. Secundaire prothese-infecties kunnen ieder moment na de implantatie van de prothese ontstaan. Meestal zijn de bacteriën dan via de bloedbaan bij de prothese gekomen. De bacteriën kunnen afkomstig zijn van een infectie elders in het lichaam of uit de commensale flora van de patiënt. Bij een medische of tandheelkundige ingreep kan deze flora in de bloedbaan terecht komen.
