15. Integreren van mobilisatie van het zenuwstelsel in de behandeling

Abstract

Elke actie, reactie of interactie naar de omgeving is alleen mogelijk als een spier contraheert. Gesteld is zelfs dat ‘bewegen alles te maken heeft met het leven van de mens en het zijn alleen de spieren die dat kunnen doen, of het nu is om een woord te fluisteren of een heel bos met bomen om te hakken’ (Sherrington 1947). Maar hierbij mag niet worden vergeten dat bij elke beweging het zenuwstelsel zich moet aanpassen door middel van adaptief verlengen of verkorten van zenuwen en zenuwstructuren en dat elke spiercontractie het resultaat is van een impuls die via de zenuwen wordt geleid. Het is alsof de motorische stelsels ‘in dienst staan’ van de rest van het zenuwstelsel omdat ze uitsluitend wel of niet kunnen reageren wanneer de verschillende sensorische stelsels intact zijn en er een integrerende werking van het stelsel als geheel plaatsvindt (Tuchmann-Duplessis e.a. 1975). Naast ‘heer en meester’ van de beweging is het zenuwstelsel ook van wezenlijk belang voor de ademhalingsfunctie, de hartfrequentie en de bloedsomloop, en zijn alle zintuiglijke modaliteiten afhankelijk van de informatie die het zenuwstelsel naar en van de hersenen transporteert.
