Sponsored by Medtronic Inc. and under the chairmanship of K. Swedberg (Gotëberg, Sweden), who had just been awarded the Gold Medal of the ESC for his major contributions to cardiology, a symposium was held that contributed to device technology in the management and treatment of heart failure patients. This is a fast-growing field of interest that started with the development and clinical success of the cardiac resynchronisation pacing systems and implantable cardioverter systems. Now these systems are implanted worldwide in a subset of suitable heart failure patients.
