Sponsored by Medtronic Inc. and under the chairmanship of K. Swedberg (Gotëberg, Sweden), who had just been awarded the Gold Medal of the ESC for his major contributions to cardiology, a symposium was held that contributed to device technology in the management and treatment of heart failure patients. This is a fast-growing field of interest that started with the development and clinical success of the cardiac resynchronisation pacing systems and implantable cardioverter systems. Now these systems are implanted worldwide in a subset of suitable heart failure patients. However, the new development of devices that enable monitoring of the fluid status of intraventricular pressures will definitely help us in treating our heart failure patients, and in optimising their (medical) treatment, well-being as well as their prognosis. …
