Introductie

Hoofdstuk 1 beschrijft de geschiedenis van de totale heupprothese en de talrijke problemen waarmee men te maken kreeg bij het ontwerpen van een prothese met een acceptabele levensduur. Voor- en nadelen van metaal-op-metaalarticulatie, polyethyleen, de resurfacing-methode en het gebruik van cement komen aan de orde.

Ten slotte beschrijft dit hoofdstuk de meest voorkomende oorzaken van artrose, een aandoening van het gewricht die zo ernstig kan zijn, dat het gehele gewricht chirurgisch moet worden vervangen door een kunstgewricht.

De levensduur ligt gemiddeld rond twintig jaar, maar is sterk afhankelijk van het activiteitenniveau van de patiënt, het type prothese en hoe recent de prothese geïmplanteerd is.
