De omgang met ouderen vergt speciale vaardigheden van de huisarts, al was het maar omdat zij vaker een chronische aandoening hebben of een complexe en emotioneel beladen ziekte zoals kanker. Met name oudere patiënten hebben vaak moeite om alle informatie en adviezen te bevatten die tijdens de vaak ingewikkelde en langdurige diagnose- en behandelingstrajecten over hen worden uitgestort. Dit artikel belicht een aantal leeftijdsgebonden factoren die een rol spelen en geeft praktische adviezen om een gesprek met oudere patiënten patiëntgerichter en efficiënter te laten verlopen.
Ouderen hebben soms een verkeerd beeld van hun ziekte en door sensorische, functionele of cognitieve beperkingen kunnen ze de gegeven informatie ook vaak niet goed onthouden of begrijpen. Het is goed daar in het contact rekening mee te houden door informatie helder te structureren en ‘bruggetjes’ te maken tussen verschillende onderwerpen. Ook kan men de patiënt ter afronding van het gesprek de belangrijkste informatie laten herhalen. Zeker in het contact met ouderen is het van belang alert te zijn op specifieke zorgen, vragen en andere signalen van de patiënt en daarop door te vragen.
