Het effect van lichamelijke activiteit op arm-, nek- en schouderklachten

Doel van ons onderzoek was, na te gaan of verschillende vormen van lichamelijke activiteit in de vrije tijd een preventief effect hebben op arm-, nek- en schouderklachten en op ziekteverzuim vanwege deze klachten. Wij deden dit aan de hand van gegevens uit een prospectief cohortonderzoek onder 1742 werknemers met een follow-upperiode van 3 jaar. De onderzochte lichamelijke activiteiten bestonden uit sporten en actief woon-werkverkeer. Wij analyseerden de gegevens met behulp van generalized estimating equation (de GEE-methode). Sporten bleek een preventief effect te hebben op nek- en schouderklachten (OR 0,82; 95%-BI 0,67-0,99), maar niet op armklachten. Sporten bleek ook een preventief effect te hebben op zowel kort (OR 0,48; 95%-BI 0,28-0,84) als langdurig (OR 0,37; 95%-BI 0,17-0,84) ziekteverzuim in verband met arm-, nek- of schouderklachten. Een hoge gemiddelde frequentie (3 uur per week of meer) heeft minder effect dan langdurig volgehouden sportbeoefening (10 maanden per jaar of meer). Ook actief woon-werkverkeer lijkt een preventief effect te hebben op arm-, nek- en schouderklachten en het daarmee geassocieerde ziekteverzuim, maar de analyses lieten geen significant verband zien.
