Inleiding Het effect van glucosaminesulfaat op artrose is omstreden. Om meer duidelijkheid te krijgen voerden we een geblindeerd, gerandomiseerd, placebo-gecontroleerd onderzoek uit bij eerstelijns patiënten met heupartrose. We onderzochten of glucosaminesulfaat effect heeft op de symptomen en de progressie van artrose.
Methoden We randomiseerden in huisartsenpraktijken 222 patiënten met heupartrose. Zij kregen 2 jaar lang eenmaal daags 1500 mg orale glucosaminesulfaat of een placebo. De patiënten moesten voldoen aan een van de criteria voor heupartrose van het American College of Rheumatology.
Primaire uitkomstmaten waren pijn- en functiescores over 24 maanden en gewrichtsspleetafname na 24 maanden. De belangrijkste secundaire uitkomstmaten waren pijn, functie en stijfheid na 3, 12 en 24 maanden.
Resultaten Bij aanvang waren de demografische en klinische variabelen in beide groepen vergelijkbaar. Na 24 maanden zagen we geen verschillen in pijn: –1,54 (95%-BI –5,43-2,36) en functie: –2,01 (95%-BI –5,38-1,36). Ook de gewrichtsspleetversmalling was na 24 maanden vergelijkbaar met –0,029 (95%-BI –0,122-0,064). Tot slot vonden we geen verschillen in de secundaire uitkomstmaten.
Conclusie Glucosaminesulfaat bestrijdt de symptomen en progressie van heupartrose niet beter dan een placebo.
