Abstract

Hart- en vaatziekten blijven in Europa de belangrijkste doodsoorzaak bij mannen ouder dan 45 jaar en vrouwen ouder dan 65 jaar. De onderliggende atherosclerose ontwikkelt zich sluimerend en is doorgaans reeds gevorderd en moeilijk te corrigeren als er symptomen optreden. De ontwikkeling van hart- en vaatziekten is sterk gebonden aan de leefstijl en bepaalde risicofactoren. Beklemtoond moet worden dat bij het bepalen van het individuele cardiovasculair risico men zich moet richten op de gewogen som van alle risicofactoren. Aandacht besteden aan de correctie van slechts één risicofactor is té fragmentair. Het inschatten van het globale cardiovasculair risico geeft een vollediger beeld.
