Herpes labialis en genitalis

Samenvatting

Herpesinfecties komen zeer veel voor, maar verlopen goeddeels asymptomatisch. Omdat ‘herpes’ een nogal beladen begrip is, dient men bij de diagnostiek ervan zorgvuldig te werk te gaan. Virologisch onderzoek (kweek, polymerase chain reaction) biedt de mogelijkheid het virus te typeren, hetgeen bij de counseling van een patiënt en zijn of haar partner van belang kan zijn. Primaire en veel klachten veroorzakende herpesinfecties dienen direct, dat wil zeggen voor de uitslag van het laboratoriumonderzoek, te worden behandeld. Bij frequent recidiverende herpes genitalis kan een suppressieve therapie aanzienlijke gezondheidswinst betekenen. Er moet rekening mee worden gehouden dat er soms complicaties optreden.
