‘Genes in a bottle’: hoe genen en sociale omgevingsfactoren alcoholgebruik beïnvloeden

Abstract

Er zijn verschillende oorzakelijke factoren die ten grondslag liggen aan alcoholgebruik en -misbruik. Wat betreft invloeden uit de omgeving zijn in de adolescentie de opvoeding van ouders (en dan met name het stellen van regels) en het drinkgedrag van ouders en vrienden van belang. Minder regels en zwaarder drinkende ouders en vrienden leiden tot meer alcoholgebruik door jongeren. Directe relaties tussen genen en alcoholgebruik blijken lastiger aan te tonen. Dit komt mogelijk doordat genen slechts afhankelijk van omgevingsfactoren tot uiting komen. Zo zorgen regels van ouders ervoor dat de genetische kwetsbaarheid van jongeren ‘gecontroleerd’ wordt. Ook lijken er verschillen in genexpressie op te treden tussen adolescenten en volwassenen.
