Farmacotherapie bij ouderen

Samenvatting

Ouderen hebben vaak meerdere medische problemen tegelijkertijd en slikken daarvoor vaak meerdere medicijnen tegelijk. Polyfarmacie heeft zijn risico’s, en zeker bij ouderen die verhoogd gevoelig zijn voor bijwerkingen en interacties van geneesmiddelen. Geneesmiddelgerelateerde problemen komen in deze fragiele populatie frequent voor, en zijn verantwoordelijk voor heel wat supplementaire morbiditeit, soms voor opname in het ziekenhuis. Polyfarmacie leidt dan ook tot belangrijke directe en indirecte meerkosten.

Het is zaak om bij ouderen extra zorgvuldig therapeutische keuzen af te wegen, en aandacht te besteden aan het juiste gebruik van geneesmiddelen: farmacotherapie bij ouderen is zorg-op-maat.
