Extreme obesitas onder basisschoolkinderen: prevalentie en sociaal-emotionele problemen

Samenvatting

In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op de prevalentie van extreme obesitas en de relatie met sociaal-emotionele problemen onder basisschoolkinderen in Amsterdam. De gegevens zijn verzameld tussen januari 2006 en januari 2009 tijdens het preventief gezondheidsonderzoek onder 5- en 10-jarigen door de artsen en de verpleegkundigen van de Jeugdgezondheidszorg in Amsterdam. Hieruit blijkt dat van de 5- en de 10-jarigen 1,7 % lijdt aan extreme obesitas. Risicogroepen zijn jongens, kinderen van niet-Nederlandse afkomst en kinderen die in buurten met een benedengemiddeld of lage welvaart wonen. Voor zowel de 5- als 10-jarigen blijkt dat extreme obesitas geassocieerd is met psychosociale problemen en voor de 10-jarigen ook met opvoedproblemen. Gezien de resultaten van dit onderzoek is het vanuit epidemiologisch en klinisch oogpunt belangrijk om extreme obesitas als een aparte gewichtsklasse te onderscheiden. De uitkomsten kunnen bijdragen aan vroegsignalering en een gerichte aanpak van de problematiek.
