Wanneer volwassen patiënten met een angststoornis hun ouders als minder warm en meer overbeschermend beschrijven, is dat dan omdat zij werkelijk anders werden opgevoed, of is hun herinnering vertekend? Onderzoek van de ouderlijke opvoedkundige stijl op de kinderleeftijd maakt aannemelijk dat een angstig kind werkelijk anders wordt opgevoed dan zijn niet angstige broer of zus. Maar die afwijkende opvoedkundige aanpak van de ouders wordt ook door het kind zelf teweeggebracht.
