Samenvatting

Diabetes mellitus is een stofwisselingsziekte waarbij de glucoseregulatie is verstoord. Er bestaan twee hoofdvarianten: diabetes mellitus type 1 en diabetes mellitus type 2. Van de ongeveer 1,2 miljoen mensen die met diabetes bekend zijn bij de huisarts, heeft circa 9% diabetes mellitus type 1. Dit is een auto-immuunziekte waarbij de bètacellen van de eilandjes van Langerhans in het pancreas grotendeels zijn vernietigd en die vaak op jonge leeftijd vastgesteld wordt. Type 2 is een chronisch-progressieve stofwisselingsziekte waarbij de insuline door insulineresistentie onvoldoende effect heeft en er uiteindelijk onvoldoende insuline wordt geproduceerd. Andere vormen zijn secundaire diabetes (veroorzaakt door medicatie of operatie), MODY (maturity onset diabetes of the young), LADA (latent auto-immune diabetes in adults) en zwangerschapsdiabetes. Diabetes kan op den duur leiden tot ernstige complicaties. In dit hoofdstuk worden de preventie en behandeling besproken, en de rol van voeding bij die behandeling.
