De Social Norms Approach voor legaal en illegaal drugsgebruik bij studenten

Samenvatting

Ons gedrag wordt voor een groot deel bepaald door de ‘sociale normen’ van de groep waartoe we behoren en die we als onze referentie beschouwen. Deze sociale normen schatten we echter vaak verkeerd in, en meestal gaat die verkeerde inschatting in de richting dat we het gezonde gedrag van de referentiegroep onderschatten en het ongezonde gedrag overschatten. Dit worden mispercepties genoemd. Als we ons gedrag gaan afstemmen op deze mispercepties, bestaat het risico dat het eigen gedrag ‘ongezonder’ gaat worden. De Social Norms Approach is een methode die probeert te achterhalen wat de correcte sociale normen zijn en geeft hierover feedback aan de doelgroep. Op die manier wordt getracht tot een positieve gedragsverandering te komen. In dit artikel wordt de Social Norms Approach uitgelegd en worden resultaten getoond van een Europees onderzoek dat de Social Norms Approach concreet heeft toegepast op legaal en illegaal drugsgebruik bij studenten uit zeven landen. Er wordt aangegeven op welke vlakken er mispercepties bestaan bij de studenten, en hoe die verschillen naar geslacht en tussen de landen. Er wordt aangetoond hoe de resultaten in de praktijk kunnen worden gebruikt om preventieboodschappen op te stellen.
