De gehechtheidstheorie als ‘grand theory’?

Grenzen en vooruitzichten van een theorie over sociale verbondenheid

Samenvatting

Voor onderzoekers en professionals op het terrein van kinderen en gezinnen is de gehechtheidstheorie een onontbeerlijk onderdeel geworden van de wetenschappelijke scholing. Het toepassingsgebied van de gehechtheidstheorie is de laatste jaren verbreed van kinderen naar adolescenten en volwassenen, en van doorsnee gezinnen naar klinische groepen, bijzondere opvoedingssituaties en therapeutische relaties. Ontwikkelt de gehechtheidstheorie zich op deze manier tot een ‘grand theory’ van alles wat met sociale verbondenheid te maken heeft? Aan de hand van deze vraag worden in dit artikel de grenzen van de gehechtheidstheorie verkend, en worden conclusies getrokken ten aanzien van het onderzoek dat nodig is om de theorie in onderzoek en in de hulpverlening op een juiste manier verder te ontwikkelen en toe te passen.
