Abstract

Het geheugen is een essentiële cognitieve functie, die ons in staat stelt in een dynamische wereld te kunnen functioneren. Cognitief onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat er verschillende vormen van geheugen zijn. Bovendien zijn er verschillende processen in het geheugen: verwerken van informatie, opslag van informatie en ophalen van informatie. De laatste decennia is duidelijk geworden dat meerdere neurotransmitters betrokken zijn bij het geheugen. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat de verschillende aspecten van het geheugen een eigen biologisch substraat hebben. Wellicht dat in de toekomst voor afzonderlijke geheugenproblemen een passende behandeling kan worden geboden.
