De betekenis van Donald J. Kiesler (1933–2007) voor de psychotherapie

Abstract

In het voorjaar van 2007 overleed Donald J. Kiesler, emeritus hoogleraar aan de Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond (VS). Hij was een belangrijk denker en onderzoeker op het gebied van de psychotherapie. Vier onderwerpen en gebieden waarop hij een belangrijke invloed heeft gehad, worden in dit artikel besproken:
1.
zijn onderzoeksbijdrage aan het roemruchte Wisconsin-project in de jaren ’60, onder leiding van Carl Rogers;
 
2.
zijn baanbrekende artikel over de ‘uniformiteitsmythe’ in psychotherapieonderzoek uit 1966;
 
3.
de ontwikkeling van zijn interpersoonlijke communicatietheorie en -therapie (ICT) in de jaren ’80 en ’90;
 
4.
de ontwikkeling van de Impact message inventory circumplex (IMI-C), een innovatief interpersoonlijk meetinstrument dat het psychotherapeuten mogelijk maakt om van zichzelf ‘objectieve’ tegenoverdrachtreacties te registreren.
